In response to the fish kills which occurred in the Eastern Caribbean and along the coast of Trinidad and Tobago, CEHI, the CARICOM Secretariat and CFRAMP, coordinated a Workshop in Barbados on the 16 October. The objective was to bring together all interested or affected parties to gain an understanding of the situation and also to strategize on how such incidents should be coordinated, should there be occurrences in the future. The Workshop identified the need for research to determine the causes of the fish kills in the region.

Training Modules on Management of Industrial Chemicals in the Automotive Mechanic and Refrigeration & Air Conditioning industries were prepared by CEHI in partnership with the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP) and with the endorsement of the Ministry of Education. Pilot training activities for a six week period for students in the Automotive Mechanic and the Refrigeration & Air Conditioning disciplines at SJPP were scheduled for early in 1997.
