Sanitary Landfill Monitoring - The Institute has been working with Solid Waste Management Authorities and Ministries of Health in Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Vincent & the Grenadines to develop comprehensive programmes for the Monitoring of Sanitary Landfills. This involved the development of monitoring regime as well as training of personnel to conduct landfill monitoring. CEHI supports the monitoring programmes of these countries by providing analytical services.

Training - Biomedical Waste Management Training provided to Health Care Administrators, Environmental Health Professionals and Solid Waste Managers

2001

Training -The Institute provided a resource person for the Caribbean Energy Information System's  Clean Development Mechanism Workshop in Grenada

2000

Training - CEHI, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Family Affairs and Gender Relations of St Lucia, the Caribbean Development Bank, Pan American Health Organisation, Health Caribbean and Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec, hosted a training course in Environmental Health Impact Assessment (EHIA).

The course was part of a planning exercise geared toward the development of a comprehensive, region-wide EHIA programme.

It was designed to develop the skills of health and planning officers and private consultants in the preparation and review of environmental health impact assessments related to both public and private sector projects.

1999

Water Quality Testing - Conducted an assessment of the status of drinking water quality in Grenada. This study was structured to provide information as to the changes which have occurred in the area of water quality improvement.

Water Quality Testing - Additional equipment was supplied in order to reinforce water testing capabilities. Equipment was supplied to the Produce Chemist Laboratory, Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Fisheries, Grenada

Supply of computer equipment - Computer equipment was purchased and dispatched to the Grenada (National Water & Sewerage Authority).

Training - The Information & Programme Officer provided in-country training in the manipulation of the quality database software. Hardware and software for the development of the database system were supplied.

The Institute provided national level support (hardware, software, training and technical) to varying degrees for improving the management of water quality data and information in Grenada.

Training - "Sanitary Surveys:-Principle, Methodology and Application" training course was conducted in Grenada during the period January 26-30, 1998 and was done in collaboration with WWF/ENCORE, the CARICOM/GTZ Environmental Health Improvement Project and the USEPA.

Water quality testing - Additional equipment was supplied through the CEHI/ENCORE Project to beneficiary agencies in OECS countries in order to reinforce their water testing capabilities. Equipment was supplied to the National Water & Sewerage Authority.

Training - The Information & Programme Officer provided in-country training in the manipulation of the quality database software. Grenada was supplied with computer hardware and software for the development of the database system.

The Institute provided national level support (hardware, software, training and technical) to varying degrees for improving the management of water quality data and information in the Grenada.>

Computer Equipment - Supplied computer equipment to assist in the development of a national computerised water database for the National Water and Sewerage Authority.

Training - The Institute trained two representatives from the Ministry of Health in the "Management of Sanitary Landfills".

Training - The Scientist/Coordinator visited and provided in-country training to identify individuals Grenada. The training reinforced training conducted in 1996, and focused on the DREL 2000 kit and the DelAgua test kit and complemented the commissioning of laboratories.

Environmental Impact Assessment - Conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Perseverance Landfill site, Grenada on behalf of the Government of Grenada

Waste Management - The Institute trained two Environmental Health Officers and a Supervisor at the National Water & Sewerage Authority in the " Operation and Maintenance of Waste Water Treatment Plants".

The Institute, through the Environmental Health Improvement Project, conducted and environmental Impact Assessment for the Perseverance Landfill Site, on behalf of the Government of Grenada.

Information Services - As a result of the findings of the study conducted by CEHI on WASAMS in 1995, the Institute entered into an agreement to pilot the implementation of WASAMS in Barbados and Grenada. Due to lack of commitment on the part of the national agencies, much progress has not been made on this activity. However, training was conducted for the Water Authority (NAWASA) personnel in Grenada.

Information Services - To address the water quality concerns of the Region, the Institute developed and began pilot testing a Water Quality Monitoring Information System. This system is expected to capture water quality data for drinking, ground, surface, coastal, recreational and waste waters. By the end of 1995, the system was being piloted at the Water Authorities in Dominica and Grenada. It is hoped that by September 1996, the system would be implemented in all of the OECS countries before final implementation in the remainder of CEHI's Member States.

The Institute in its desire to improve the management of environmental health information in its Member States, conducted with support from PAHO/CPC, an assessment of the management information system capabilities of the Ministries of Health and the Water Authorities in the above countries.

Parallel to above, an evaluation of the Water and Sanitation Monitoring System (WASAMS) was undertaken. This evaluation identified the reasons for the non-implementation of the system in the targeted countries. An implementation plan was developed and is to be put in place in early 1996 with support from PAHO/CPC.

Environmental Monitoring - Equipment and chemicals ordered during late 1994 were received at CEHI. The equipment was tested at the Institute and freighted to Produce Chemist Laboratory and the Ministry of Agriculture

  • Environmental Health Department
  • Fisheries Division
  • Forestry Division
  • National Science and research Centre
  • Produce Chemist Laboratory

Information gathered included: in-country technical expertise; laboratory facilities; on-going monitoring programmes; potential impacts; water quality regulations; treatment and disinfection; equipment required; training required; data storage, processing and dissemination. Additional information, especially in the area of laboratory equipment is to be provided by some agencies.
