Training - CEHI, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Family Affairs and Gender Relations of St Lucia, the Caribbean Development Bank, Pan American Health Organisation, Health Caribbean and Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec, hosted a training course in Environmental Health Impact Assessment (EHIA).
The course was part of a planning exercise geared toward the development of a comprehensive, region-wide EHIA programme.
It was designed to develop the skills of health and planning officers and private consultants in the preparation and review of environmental health impact assessments related to both public and private sector projects.
Training - Trained representatives in Advance Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment.

Training - Trained a laboratory technician from the Food and Drug Department of the Ministry of Health. Participant was attached to the laboratory for the month of August to learn pesticide residue extraction techniques and analysis of pesticides on the Gas Chromatograph.

Training - The Institute trained three government representatives in the "Management of Sanitary Landfills."
- In order to assist in the re-organization of the Environmental Health (EH) Unit of the Ministry of Health, the Institute with support from the EHIP, provided both financial and technical support for a three day planning workshop. In addition, the Institute is assisting the Unit in the development of the EH profile of Guyana.
Laboratory Assessment - A needs assessment of the laboratory of the Food and Drug Department of the Government Analyst, Ministry of Health was conducted in July. This was done with specific reference to the mandate of the Department to monitor potable and raw water supplies in the country.
A similar exercise was carried out also in July, for the Georgetown Water and Sewerage Commissioners with specific reference to the establishment of a water quality testing laboratory.
Barama Co. Ltd., which has a logging concession in Guyana, requested that an analysis of water from a canal within its concession for the presence of a pesticide used to treat the harvested timber. Samples of soil and water were collected in July for analysis.

Waste Management - The Institute trained two Environmental Officers and an Engineer at the Georgetown Sewerage & Water Commissioners in the "Operation and Maintenance of Waste Water Treatment Plants".
The Institute also followed up on earlier offers to assist the City of Georgetown in the Identification and development of a new sanitary Landfill.
Information Services - Computer Hardware and Software was donated to the Environmental Health Unit, Ministry of Health, to assist in the management of environmental health information. A system for managing this information was implemented and training was conducted . Field data has since been entered into the system.
Environmental Monitoring - Equipment for water quality testing purchased through the CEHI/ENCORE Project was shipped to the Ministry of Health and Produce Chemist Laboratory.

Information Services - In order to improve the management of data and information in the Environmental Health Division of the Ministry of Health, the Institute implemented a pilot Environmental Health Management Information System in the Division. As part of the pilot, computer hardware would be donated in early 1996 to ensure the information technology infrastructure is available.
Laboratory Services - A scientist from the Government Analyst, Food and Drug Department, Ministry of Health, spent three weeks at CEHI receiving on-the-job training in aspects of the chemical analysis of water.
