Training - Officers from the Ministry of Health were attached to CEHI's laboratories for training in microbiological techniques.

Public Awareness - Preparation of Public awareness material and implementation of a programme for the Solid Waste Management Corporation.

Environmental Impact Assessment - Prepared terms of reference for an environmental impact assessment for a golf course in St. Kitts

Pollutant Identification - Identified pollutant which washed ashore on behalf of the National Emergency Management Agency Nevis.

Training - CEHI, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Family Affairs and Gender Relations of St Lucia, the Caribbean Development Bank, Pan American Health Organisation, Health Caribbean and Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec, hosted a training course in Environmental Health Impact Assessment (EHIA).

The course was part of a planning exercise geared toward the development of a comprehensive, region-wide EHIA programme.

It was designed to develop the skills of health and planning officers and private consultants in the preparation and review of environmental health impact assessments related to both public and private sector projects.

Training - Trained representatives in Advanced Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment.

Technical Advice- Provided technical advice related to landfill design/provision and testing of on-site chlorination system for drinking water supply

BASELWork began in earnest on the BASEL Inventory of Spent and Outdated Chemicals in the Caribbean Region. The project is being conducted in seven countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.

Water Quality Testing - Supplied water quality testing and computer equipment to assist in the development of national computerised water quality database

Training - The Information & Programme Officer provided in-country training to individuals in St. Kitts and Nevis in the manipulation of the quality database software.

Conference Participation - The Institute, through the EHIP, supported the attendance of a participant from St. Kitts/Nevis at ReCaribe'97, the Wider Caribbean's first annual Recycling and Waste Reduction Conference, held in Trinidad and Tobago.

Training - The Institute trained two Ministry of Health staff members in the "Management of Sanitary Landfills".

Training - The Scientist/Coordinator visited and provided in-country training to identified individuals in Dominica, Grenada and Nevis. The training reinforced training conducted in 1996, and focused on the DREL 2000 kit and the DelAgua test kit and complemented the commissioning of laboratories.

Waste Mangement - The Institute trained three Ministry of Health Staff in the " Operation and Maintenance of Waste Water Treatment Plants".

Environmental Monitoring - Equipment for water quality testing purchased through the CEHI/ENCORE Project was shipped to the Public Health Department.

The Scientist/Coordinator visited and provided in-country training on the use of the Del Agua Field Kit for the Determination of Feacal Coliform, turbidity and pH.

Environmental Monitoring - Equipment and chemicals ordered during late 1994 were received at CEHI. The equipment was tested at the Institute and freighted to the Public Health Department of the Ministry of Health

Environmental Monitoring - The Scientist/Coordinator visited St. Kitts and Nevis in order to gather information on Water Quality Monitoring in the country. The agencies which participated in this assessment are as follows:

  • Nevis Water Department
  • Public Health Department
  • Fisheries Division
  • South-East Peninsula Land Development & Conservation Board.
  • Water Services Department (St. Kitts)

Information gathered included: in-country technical expertise; laboratory facilities; on-going monitoring programmes; potential impacts; water quality regulations; treatment and disinfection; equipment required; training required; data storage, processing and dissemination. Additional information, especially in the area of laboratory equipment is to be provided by some agencies.
