St. Kitts and Nevis

Overview

The labour force in St. Kitts and Nevis is 18,172 (June 1995) out of a total population of 38,819 (July 2000 est.)  The economy is largely based on agriculture (mostly sugar cane). Tourism and offshore banking have become increasing important in recent times.

The Labour Department receives reports of occupational accidents. The Ministry of Health also monitors occupational accidents. The Social Security Board pays benefits for employment injury claims.

A National Plan for Workers’ Health has been developed jointly by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labour, the Employers’ Federation and the trade unions.

Legal Framework

There are no specific health and safety regulations however there are some provisions for OSH under the St. Kitts/Nevis Factories Act 1955. There are also safety, health and welfare provisions under the Merchant Shipping (Registry) Ordinance 1986
