General Overview of Occupational Health and Safety Environment |

The St. Lucian Labour force is approximately 77, 990 out of a total population of 156,780 (July-Dec. 2000 est. In 1999 approximately 18% of employed persons were in the agricultural, hunting and forestry sector followed by 17% in the wholesale and retail trade (July-Dec est.). St. Lucia’s main agricultural products are bananas and coconuts. The Occupational Health and Safety Unit of the Ministry of Ministry of Legal Affairs, Home Affairs and Labour inspects health and safety conditions at places of employment. They operate under the Employees' Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1985. |

There is recent OSH legislation in
St. Lucia in the form of the
Employees (Occupational Health and Safety) Act 1985. No.
10. This Act
is administered by the Labour Department. It has
provisions for preventative health and the notification
of employment injuries. In addition, St. Lucia has the Pesticide
Control (Labelling of Pesticides) Regulations 1987. S.I.

There is also the Accidents and Occupational Diseases (Notification/Ordinance chapter 107) and the Industrial and Commercial Buildings (Fire Safety Act), 1973.
