Anguilla

Overview

A July 2000 estimate has Anguilla’s population at 11,797 with a labour force of 4,400 (1992 figures). The commercial sector makes up 36% of the labour force followed by 29% in the services sector and 18% in construction industry. Anguilla’s economy is heavily dependent on tourism and offshore banking. The active tourism industry has facilitated a thriving construction sector  (World Factbook 2000

The Labour Department and the Environmental Health Department are responsible for occupational health and safety in Anguilla. They receive reports of industrial accidents.

The Environmental Health Department and the Labour Department have proposed OSH surveillance activities for that island. Also, the Labour Department is in the process of trying to pass appropriate OSH legislation based on a draft Model CARICOM Law. Once this has been done the department plans to host OSH seminars.
