Bahamas

Overview

The population of the Bahamas is approximately 294,982 (July 2000). The labour force is around 148,000 (1996 figures). Of this figure 40% of the labour force is in tourism, 50% is in other services, 5% is in industry and 5% is in agriculture (1995 est.). The economy is largely based on tourism, banking is another key industry (World Factbook 2000

The National Insurance Board (NIB) pays workers’ injury compensation.  Typical occupational injuries reported in claims to the National Insurance Board in 1996 included musculoskeletal problems, fractures and sprains.  

Inspectors from the Ministry of Labour carry out workplace investigations, as do the officials of the Department of Environmental Health.

Legal and Regulatory Framework

There is a proposed Health and Safety Act 2000 which went  before parliament in October of 2000, it has not yet been passed, it is scheduled to go before Parliament again.  See House Debates Health and Safety Bill.
