Montserrat’s population is around 6,409 (July 2000 est.). The labour force in 1992 was 4,521 (the current figure would be lower taking into account the emigration of Montserratians following the 1995 volcanic activity on that island). Prior to the volcanic activity of 1995, key industries on the island were tourism and rum. Since 1995 construction is the dominant economic activity on the island (World Factbook 2000). The Montserrat Social Security Board provides employment injury compensation. |
